Tridge has an absolutely brilliant scheme for doing file indexing. We discussed it a while back, but I had forgotten (in fact, I can't remember which of us came up with the scheme; I'd like to claim it as mine only I can't believe I'd have forgotten about something that brilliant if I'd come up with it). I'd love to run off and implement it, but with my upcoming trip to Germany then the US, and all the normal demands on my time, I'm simply not going to have time. I'm sure whoever gets to it first will have a field day with it.
