Chris's Random Ramblings

Sat, 05 Nov 2005 - Off to Everest

I'm headed off tomorrow to fly to Kathmandu to hike up to Everest Base Camp. I'm also going on a short safari at Chitwan National Park afterwards, and will be away for almost four weeks. Unfortunately Kelly and the kits won't be able to make it so I'll be missing them a lot. I wonder if there'll be any internet cafes up there?

Mon, 05 Sep 2005 - Memory Fragmentation

Whilst in the US I spent a couple of weeks working with the teams in Toronto and Watson who work on K42. It was a great opportunity to discuss some new ideas and clarify the existing ones about where we're headed with research into memory fragmentation. The hypothesis we came up with is that we should be managing memory in larger, variable sized chunks than the current more common 4k (or with large pages up to 16k-64k) pages.

The idea is that the main advantages would be cache friendlier memory management data structures, a natural reduction in fragmentation of memory and added flexibility to be able to utilise hardware large page support. I've written up a summary if the ideas and shorter term plans for research on the K42 wiki.

Mon, 05 Sep 2005 - Trip photos

I've put up all the photos from our recent trip to Canada and the US. I'm especially happy with the ones of the Grand Canyon region. I can definitely recommend taking the effort to travel to the North Rim instead of the more popular South Rim. The views are just as spectacular, if not more so as you're at a higher altitude looking down on the South Rim, but importantly its not nearly as crowded. There were quite a few places where we had the lookout to ourselves. Also you get to visit Zion National Park along the way which was also very impressive.

Fri, 05 Aug 2005 - Mt Kisco

Been pretty busy here in Mt Kisco both spending time at the office working with the part of the K42 research team here (lots of really interesting things going on here) as well as sampling lots of the local restaurants. On Sunday Jeremy and I headed down into NYC with Jimi and Hollis. Had an interesting time walking around the SOHO region.

Have been missing Kelly as she's in Austin at the moment, but had a wonderful surprise from her waiting for me when I got back to the hotel room last night.

Wed, 05 Jan 2005 - iPods for toddlers Lent my (well padded) iPod to Peter, my almost 2 year old nephew. He absolutely loved it, carrying it around with him while dancing and playing with other toys. He was a bit confused when the music temporarily stopped between tracks, taking the headphones off and saying "broken?". Need a velcro case for the iPod that will stick to his jumpsuit.

Wed, 05 Jan 2005 - Morialta Falls and Waterfall Gully to Mt Lofty

While back in Adelaide I went for a couple of short walks. The first was with my neice and sister-in-law up and around Morialta falls. I haven't been there for a couple of years and it was an opportunity to try out my new Nikon D70 camera. Still learning how to use it properly, but managed to get some nice photos. It was rather warm and my 7 year old niece wasn't too enthusiastic about some of the steep bits but she did pretty well, encouraged with the prospect of getting an ice-cream at the end.

On New Years Eve I went of a walk up to Mt Lofty from Waterfall gully. Although the day was to get pretty hot, the trail itself was shady and cool during the morning. I haven't been up there since high school and its now asphalt nearly all the way to the top. A lot of benches along the way for those who want to stop as well as a restauarant both at the top and bottom. Really nice views from the top and and shaded outdoor area with tables and chairs. Very pleasant.
