Mon, 15 Nov 2004 - Bono on Africa

From a speech Bono gave at the recent Labour party conference in the UK. Well worth reading.

Let's get real here on a couple of things -- let's get to some uncomfortable truths.

Let's be clear about what this problem is and what this problem isn't.

Firstly, this is not about charity, it's about justice.

Let me repeat that:

This is not about charity, this is about justice.

And that's too bad.

Because you're good at charity. The British, like the Irish, are good at it. Even the poorest neighbourhoods give more than they can afford.

We like to give, and we give a lot. But justice is a tougher standard. Africa makes a fool of our idea of justice; it makes a farce of our idea of equality. It mocks our pieties, it doubts our concern, it questions our commitment.

Mon, 15 Nov 2004 - Orroral Valley

I normally like to hike along ridges or up mountains because I prefer the views, but on Sunday I decided to try a walk through Orroral Valley. Its a circuit walk and the outgoing track was along the side of the valley along a firetrail. It wasn't particularly interesting, but there were some nice views when it gained some altitude. The walk back through the centre of valley was very impressive. The sun had come out but with a refreshing tail wind the weather was perfect. Had great views of very large rocks on the ridges surrounding the valley.

I quite like my newish Canon IXUS 500 camera, but for wildlife shots it doesn't have a powerful enough zoom. I think I'll save up for a digital SLR like the EOS 300D and buy a good zoom lense. I've seen some beautiful birds, but with my current camera they're so small in the photographs you can hardly see them.
