Chris's Random Ramblings

Mon, 13 Sep 2004 - Back home Been back for almost a couple of weeks but haven't had time to update the diary. Took a very long time to get over the jet lag (almost a week), probably due to the 11 hour time difference. The flight back on British Airways was very nice, with seats that go completely flat - I wonder how their First Class could be any better.

The garden doesn't seem to have survived my holiday, the drought or the cold too well. Except for a new weed which has done exceedingly well and spread over most of the backyard. It also seems to take a large amount of soil with it when removed from the ground which is rather annoying. On the bright side, no sign of snails yet!

Having lots of fun working on K42. Spent a couple of days setting up the infrastructure, but since then having been continuing the programming I started in NY. Its nice to be doing lots of coding again. Very addictive.

Am vaguely looking for a cat, but haven't managed to get myself organised enough to look at any kittens yet. I did spend a little time adding an entry to Wikipedia which Rusty reminded me of recently. I'm not sure all of the information in there can really be trusted though.

Tue, 13 Apr 2004 - Far Cry After reading some good reviews I picked up a new PC game called Far Cry on the weekend. It really is the next generation of FPS games - the graphics are quite amazing, though it made me wish my computer was a bit faster with a recommendation of a >3GHz CPU and 1Gb of memory for high performance. What is really impressive though is how realistic the physics model is. Everything seems to move like it should - objects hitting another result in the effect you would expect. Early on in the game you can push a shelf of items over, though what is really cool is that you can push the shelf upright again. The AI for the opponents is also very good - they work together as a team and do intelligent things like walk up the stairs backwards to avoid getting shot in the back.
