[K42-discussion] change to hwtools (warning for site toronto)

I made a change to hwtools. The change is not really k42 related.

The hwtools infrastructure can boot things other that k42, for example
linux. Unlike k42, linux get arguments such as ip addresses from the
command line. Since we use the same image on several different machines we
patch the image just before installing it in the bootp directory. The
script that directs the patching and that installs the image is
kernel_install. For the toronto site this script links that image to a
shared copy. It is possible that my change breaks this site, although I
have tried not to do so.

The change ensure that the image that is patched is a copy of the original
image and allows one to patch, install and boot an image that one cannot
write.
