If I understood correctly manually adding a delete() method to the abstract
base class solves the problem and you are asking what should the convention
be for abstract base classes?  My guess is that we should add a new macro
ABSTRACT_BASE_DELETE to define the delete method and put that in our
abstract base classes.  But only if 1) I understood correctly and 2) other
people agree.
