kvictim is dead (soon)
Long live kconf.
If you don't know what this means ignore this e-mail. If you've had to
deal with managing kvictim configurations, keep reading.
kvictim is about to die and a replacement tool "kconf" will take its
place. kconf will examine your configuration files in the same way that
kvictim did, so your configuration syntax and inheritance classes stay
the same, but there are now a number of new features on the front-end.
Actually, kconf is just a tool for inspecting the configurations by
hand, all of the hwconsole scripts will instead use the KConf perl
module to access the configuration files.
One of the most impressive features of the kconf tool is the --help
option, which now contains *real* *helpful* information.
There are also some other new features that may be of interest to people:
- an "origin" option that instead of giving you the value of a
particular field, show you the name and line-number from which the value
is obtained. This can come in handy if you're messing around with the
inheritance tree and can't figure out how a particular value is being
set.
- a "connect" directive has been added to the config file syntax, this
tells KConf to go to a specified TCP port to read config data. The idea
here is that one can set up a "KConf" server from which your
configurations are read; if you change the server's config then all
users who reference the server will see the updated version
automatically. This is an alternative to to using a commond,
NFS-accessed config file.
I've committed the kconf tool and the KConf perl module. But, so far
nothing relies on them. If you have any suggestions for improvements or
changes this is a good time to speak up.
